Something New

A couple of weeks ago I was asked by my friend Sara, the Home Ec. teacher of my kids' school, to come and talk to the girls about couponing. This is something I have never done before, stand up in front of a classroom WHAT!!!. Plus I know that there are ladies in our community that know how to coupon so much better than I. But, I told her I would give it a shot.

I made a hand out of just some of the tips I use whenever I get ready and go on a shopping trip. I don't know if I made a whole lot of sense I felt like was rambling ALOT!! The girls were gracious enough to sit quietly and not giggle out loud.
The girls were so sweet and some of them even asked questions. It was a good class I think? You might ask one of them they might tell you a WHOLE different story :)

Thanks Sara for the opportunity even though I was nervous I had so much fun. You are an amazing teacher and I can't for my girls to be in your class!

A Little Surprise

A few months before a cow has a calf the milkman will put her out in the "maternity ward". Basically, it is a pen where all the expecting cows live until a couple of weeks before their due date where then the milkman will bring her into a birthing pen in the milk barn until the birth of the baby calf. But every now and then just like human mommas a cow will give birth early. That is what happened this week. When the milkman went out to feed the expecting mommas he found this little lady in the pen.
We all went out and had to sort off the mother and the baby from the rest of the cows and get them to the milk barn. It was a little bit of a rodeo. Thank goodness it was after all the kids were home from school.
Ky LOVED the new baby! I'm sure she would have brought her in the house if we would have let her.

We put the momma in the stock trailer but we didn't want the baby to get squished so Tally picked her up and put her in the loader of the tractor where Tiana held her there while Kenton drove her to the barn. Great team work! Here are a few facts that you might not know about cows: Cows have the same gestational period as human mommas (9 months).  And when a cow has a baby instead of saying she gave birth, we say she freshened. There you go a little bit of fun facts from the farm for your day!!

Cover It Up

Yesterday, I told you about cutting corn silage. After the corn is cut the guys pack it by driving tractors over the the top and sides to get it as compact as possible.

This usually takes a number of hours.
The kids love to run up it at least once.
Then we cover the whole thing in a BIG tarp. It takes all hands on deck in order to get this done especially if it is windy at all.

After the whole thing is covered then we have to hold a section tight while the milkman and Grandpa bring buckets full of rock and dump it around the outside edge in order to seal it off from getting any moisture.
It can be a hot job so we have to make sure we have lots of water on hand.

This isn't a hard job but it can take a long time depending on how big your pile is.
Corn silage cutting was very successful this year with all of the rain we received we were blessed with a huge mountian of corn. It should be able to feed our cows for most of the winter.

Corn Silage Cutting

This weekend was a very busy weekend. It was corn silage cutting, what is corn silage you ask? When the corn grows to a certain point in the field then we have a crew come in and chop the whole stock, ear and all, that becomes feed for the cows that we put up in the silo to feed them during the winter. This year we were blessed with so much corn silage because of all of the rain we received that we filled the silo and then had to tarp some on the ground as well (that is tomorrow's post). The Milkman had LONG days! I think Friday and Saturday he had 17 hour days. He was SO tired on Sunday.

The chopper chopped the corn then the trucks would be put the silage on the ground. In the picture below Kenton in the loader tractor would scoop it up and put it into the feed wagon that Grandpa would watch and run which was hooked to a belt that would shoot it up into the silo.

Of course everyone has to eat so Grandma, the girls and I made lunch for everyone.

They were very hungry and tired so it was nice that we could take an hour break and enjoy some fellowship. We are so grateful that we didn't have any machines break down and that everything ran smoothly. It is a long 2 days but we will have feed now all winter for the cows and they love it!
